چکیده

The present series of experiments are an ex tension of in vivo studies on the metabolism of intermediates of the citric acid cycle and related compounds. In earlier studies it was found that acetate (4, 6, 11) and pyruvate (5) were not actively metabolized by the citric acid cycle in tumors in vivo. Acetate was not activated, and pyruvate was converted largely to lactate. Recent studies have indicated that L-glutamate-U-C14 is

duction in the tumor, but in slices of nontumor tissues supplementation with glucose was without effect on the metabolic patterns. The specific activity of tumor protein has been consistently found to exceed that of nontumor tis sues following incubation with labeled amino acids in vitro (16, 20, 25, 26). On the other hand, a num ber of investigators (7, 19, 24, 27) have deter mined the specifi...

The effect of tumor fractions on the uptake of carbon-14-labeled adenine into the deoxyribonucleic acids of mouse tissues.

Kelly and associates (8, 10, 20) have demon strated that phosphorus-32 is incorporated to a greater extent into the liver, kidney, and spleen deoxyribonucleic acid in mice bearing mammary carcinomas than into those of normal control mice. Comparable results were also obtained by those investigators (19) when tumor-bearing mice were given injections of either formate-carbon-14 (C14) or glycine-2...

Protein transfer in tumor-bearing rats.

The data of Francis and Winnick (3) suggest that chick heart fibroblasta utilized for growth the protein of the embryo extract nutrient medium without prior complete hydrolysis. A growing tu mor exhibits many of the characteristics of em bryonic tissue, including a marked affinity for protein constituents. The rapid growth of tumors might be explained in part if the transfer of pro tein from th...

The utilization and formation of dicarboxylic amino acids by cell suspensions of normal and malignant lymphatic tissues.

The free amino acid pattern of rodent lymphosarcomas was found to differ in a number of re spects from that of normal lymphatic tissues (6). One of the differences pertains to aspartate, the concentration of which was relatively low in the tumors, despite the fact that there was consider able oxalacetic-glutamic transaminase activity in these tissues. Moreover, when cell suspensions of the Gard...

The oxidative metabolic pattern of mouse hepatoma C954 as studied with C14-labeled acetates, propionate, octanoate, and glucose.

Weinhouse and co-workers (39-43) have estab lished that the Krebs tricarboxylic acid cycle operates in a variety of experimental tumors and that fatty acid oxidation, believed to be non existent in tumors (9), provides 2-carbon frag ments for continuous operation of this cycle in neoplastic tissues. Our studies with the mouse hepatoma C954, carried by mice of the C57-Leaden strain, also led us ...
